Richard Chalmers Photography Full Description
I have photographed weddings since 2003 in both the UK and Asia, and all started when a friend asked me if I'd shoot their wedding because they liked my other work. My style is mainly reportage and candid as I prefer capturing the real emotions, un-posed moments and the spontaneous happiness and laughter. I believe couples deserve better than the 'cookie-cutter' shots outside the wedding venue or forcing everyone to smile and say 'cheese!'. I take photographs which reflect you, your friends and family's love and the story of your special day. People comment of how relaxed I am and how calming that is. I keep things un-stressful and relaxed and let you just get on with enjoying the day without worrying about me missing any of the best bits. I've also worked in the Events Industry for 21 years, so I'm pretty bullet proof when it comes to weddings. With a range of packages to choose from, there's certainly something for any budget or personality, and I'd love to be a part of your magical day too! I set times to give myself 'goal posts', but I'm very flexible when things change. I am fully insured for both public liability and professional indemnity as well as certified in Covid-19 prevention.

Extremely easy to work with
I’ve used Richard’s services on 3 different occasions: 1) professional head shot for corporate usage; 2) my wedding; and 3) casual family photos for keepsake. He’s extremely easy to work with; he has tonnes of ideas; and has fantastic attention to detail. Plus he’s very user-friendly: toddlers, animals, grumpy teenagers...he takes it all in his stride and delivers awesome photographs at the end of it all.

Small Wedding
We recently used Richards photography for a family event. Not only was he a pleasure to deal with but importantly he genuinely took on board what we were trying to achieve for the photography. Not only were the end results absolutely amazing, his attention to detail and captured nuances were exceptional. I am not a professional photographer by any means but even I noticed how elements such as shadows, lighting make such a difference. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend him!

FAQs
Find out a bit more from our FAQs

What is your most memorable wedding?

My first wedding will always be the one I remember the most. As a photographer there's a lot of pressure on you to 'get it right' (even if my first wedding was free and for a friend!). I remember they promised me there would be no group shots, which turned out to be about an hour of group shots!

Describe your style in 5 adjectives.

Candid, memorable, story-telling, modern, collaborative

What about your business are you most proud of?

My work :)

What is your No. 1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Take pictures of your planning or start an Instagram for the planning. It's great to look back at the whole story! I look back at my wedding and there's things I forgot already!

What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?

I always thing personalised gifts to guests are great. They show the couple have thought about their invitees. Receiving something with your name on it is uch more meaningful than generic gifts, even if it's just a thank you note.

Describe your typical process with a couple.

I like to have an open and clear dialogue with the couple. It's important they aren't stressed or worried about their photography. Once booked, I setup their private area and give them a way to communicate or share ideas and visuals. Having a Client Area means I'm not bombarding them with emails and they can go at their own pace. Nearer the time I'll be in touch more, just to firm up plans and arrangements.

What is the No. 1 photo that you think every couple should take?

The prep. Although it's optional in most of my packages, I really think it's a great way to show the couple focussing on the day ahead, or nervous laughter and tears with their bridesmaids and groomsmen.

What is the most original photo you’ve been asked to take at a wedding?

I once got asked to take photos of some drapery. They were very proud of the work and that it was a special material. I'm not sure it if was an original photo, but certainly one of the more unusual requests!

What do you recommend for a rainy day wedding?

I don't think it's anything to be too worried about as long as you're prepared. I used to live in Singapore where it could rain even on a sunny say with no notice! People just carried on or limited how much time was spent outside. But umbrellas can be a great prop addition for couple shots, or even make the the group shots unique and fun!

Describe how you got into photography.

I studied Lighting Design at university, and part of the degree was photographing your work. We had a visiting lecturer talk about capturing light and telling stories with the images. After that, I was hooked on photographs, although I didn't take my first wedding photos until 3 or 4 years later.
