The Saint-Bonnet-le-Froid pass was once crossed by a Roman road. Historians, however, wonder: could it have been built over an already existing path? Perhaps one used by the Celts?
During the Roman era, no buildings existed on the pass. However, due to the numerous construction sites in the region, particularly aqueducts, it seems that the pass was used as a transit point, transporting labor and goods... and this was a few years before Christ. This is suggested by various remains found in the region, as well as several mentions in ancient archives.
Several centuries later, around the year 722, during the Merovingian period, the remains of Saint Bonnet, Archbishop of Clermont, were transported through the pass. This is where the tradition of the Saint-Bonnet-Le-Froid pilgrimage began, contributing greatly to the site's identity.
In 927, this site was on the edge of a small feudal domain under the yoke of the Order of Savigny, which was then very present. In the 12th century, traces of a Saint-Bonnet church are found in the archives, and again in the 14th century. Between the Merovingian period and the end of the Middle Ages, there are few traces of this site.
